Once the excitement from the proposal settles down a bit, it\u2019s time to get serious about the wedding planning.\u00a0 Many couples want to send out their save the dates immediately, but there is a destination wedding timeline for a reason!<\/span><\/p>\n

First thing\u2019s first: where are you tying the knot?\u00a0 Start researching your location options if you\u2019re not planning a local wedding.\u00a0 Destination weddings range from being destination only for the guests \u2013 i.e. only the couple lives in the wedding city \u2013 to every single person hopping on a flight and heading halfway across the world.\u00a0 Literally, \u201cthe world\u2019s your oyster!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Once your destination city is determined, you\u2019ll need to narrow down the venue of course.\u00a0 And you can\u2019t do that until you have a solid idea of your guest list.\u00a0 Something else you can\u2019t do without that guest list?\u00a0 Send a <\/span>destination wedding save the date<\/span><\/a>!\u00a0 Not only will you need the guest list, but all the household addresses too.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, will it be a ballroom to accommodate several hundred guests?\u00a0 An intimate seated dinner at a high end restaurant?\u00a0 An outdoor fete under the stars?\u00a0 Determining the venue will help with designing your destination wedding save the date, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of the most popular wedding venues fill up a year or more in advance, so that will factor in to your destination wedding timeline as well.\u00a0 If you\u2019re looking for a peak season date, keep in mind you will likely find yourself with a longer engagement.\u00a0 It gives you more time to plan though, which isn\u2019t a bad thing!<\/span><\/p>\n

With all of that said, when to send save the dates for a destination wedding?<\/b><\/h2>\n

We typically recommend that you send save the dates 8 months to a year before <\/span>the wedding date<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 There are several reasons for this destination wedding timeline:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Earlier is not always better.\u00a0 We like to say if someone can grow a human (i.e. not be pregnant when they get the save the date and be holding a newborn when the wedding happens), that\u2019s probably a bit too long.\u00a0 Giving people notice is a great thing, but with everyone\u2019s busy lives, too much notice can backfire.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Sending within that 8 months to a year timeline means they can act on the information.\u00a0 Flights and hotels can be planned at that point.\u00a0 If you send it two years out, they can\u2019t do anything with that yet and it might just get lost in the shuffle of life.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Your information is able to be more final.\u00a0 Crazy things can happen.\u00a0 We\u2019ve seen it in our many years in business \u2013 restaurants close or venues change policies or someone\u2019s job schedule materially changes.\u00a0 Sending too far ahead can backfire on you, and you\u2019d hate to have to send out an amended save the date.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. You don\u2019t want there to be too much time between the save the date, the invitation, and the wedding.\u00a0 Pacing them a few months apart up to the wedding date is the perfect way to keep the information in front of your guests so it doesn\u2019t get backburnered.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
