Once the venue is booked and the date is secured, save the dates next on the to-do list!\u00a0 Making sure your guests have what they need to block it off on their calendar is pretty darn important.\u00a0 And of course, giving them a little preview of what kind of day you\u2019re planning is a bit part of a destination wedding save the date.<\/span><\/p>\n

Almost any wedding in 2026 is a destination wedding \u2013 so few of us still live in our hometowns that, even if the couple does, many of their friends and family probably don\u2019t.\u00a0 That\u2019s a big driver of the destination wedding trend \u2013 if everyone has to travel anyway, why not go somewhere cool?<\/span><\/p>\n

When everyone is traveling, when to send save the dates does become a big conversation.\u00a0 There is such a thing as too early and too late.\u00a0 The sweet spot is really between 8 and 12 months.\u00a0 Before a year out, people will have a hard time knowing what their life looks like and they also can\u2019t really book anything, so it\u2019s better to send it when they can (and they don\u2019t have to scroll TOO far in their Google calendar <\/span>\ud83d\ude09<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

If you find yourself on a shorter timeline, though, there is an argument for sending the destination wedding invitations earlier instead of sending the save the dates at all.\u00a0 We would consider that at about the 5 month mark.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, now that when to send save the dates is out of the way, WHAT should you send?<\/span><\/h2>\n

There are a few key things to keep in mind when it comes to destination weddings save the dates.<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. If you want to be a little \u201cwild\u201d or \u201cout of the box\u201d \u2013 this is a good place to do it.\u00a0 Many people want to explore all the fun stationery options available nowadays,\u00a0 but for the main wedding invitation they hesitate to be quite as adventurous.\u00a0 So the save the date is the perfect place to be a little more casual or do something unusual.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. If you want to use photos, use them in the <\/span>destination wedding save the date<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 That and your website are the perfect place to show off your beautiful engagement photos.\u00a0 Typically speaking, photos wouldn\u2019t be included in a wedding invitation, so if having them printed somewhere matters to you, put them here.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Consider adding more information.\u00a0 Often, we keep the save the date really simple with just the names, date and place.\u00a0 However, you can look at it another way and say the save the date should have more of the information about hotels, general timeline, etc. so that people can book sooner rather than later.\u00a0 We would recommend putting really specific information like times due to how far out you are when these are mailed, though.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Send only to the guests you\u2019re sure are invited.\u00a0 If you plan to have any sort of B list, you cannot send those guests a save the date.\u00a0 So if fitting everyone into the venue and\/or budget is an issue, send the save the date only to the guests you know you\u2019ll invite no matter what.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Let loose with the wording.\u00a0 Even if you keep the design more traditional, you can absolutely have fun with the wording.\u00a0 Here are some fun ideas!<\/span>\n

    1. Meet me in\u2026.. (destination city)<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Bride & groom are tying the knot!<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Come for the vows, stay for the party<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Save our date (instead of \u201cthe\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. Save the weekend<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. Let\u2019s celebrate! Bride & groom are getting married<\/span><\/li>\n
    7. It\u2019s official! Bride & groom are getting married<\/span><\/li>\n
    8. \u2026and so many more!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
