That’s assuming that white doesn’t count, of course! Blue has been associated with the ceremony of holy matrimony for a very long time, as exemplified in the tradition of wearing “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.”

We may not be absolutely sure how blue came to be a symbolic color for marriage in the first place, but we are certainly glad that it is! In our opinion, the various shades of blue are incredibly beautiful when incorporated into wedding invitation card design, whether it’s in the form of paper, ink, accessories, or an important component of multicolored illustrations. Here we would like to share with you some of our very favorite recent examples of couples using “something blue” in their invitation suites.

Maximum Blue, Maximum Beauty

A heavy dose of blue gives our first example a simply beautiful look. The theme is established with a blue envelope, enhanced by an envelope liner watercolor illustration that also uses blue as a key color. Inside the envelope, the invitation suite is printed in blue ink with a few pops of darker blue in the flowers, beautifully setting off the text. Finally, the response card is actually printed on blue paper, creating a wonderful balance that brings everything together. We absolutely love the way this blue-themed suite turned out, and it certainly sets the tone for the big day!

Shades of Blue

Of course, a darker shade of blue can give an entirely different feel to an invitation suite, and that’s what we have with our next example. The bold, dark blue of the text makes it very legible, even with the very ornate fonts. The all-blue illustration on the envelope liner is stunning, and is set off even more effectively by the soft white tissue paper and the gold seal. As you can see, with the right print capabilities and skilled design work, this darker hue results in an invitation that is breathtaking from the moment the envelope is opened.

Less Is More

Sometimes, of course, you don’t want your entire invitation suite to be all blue all the time. As you probably already know, however, blue pairs beautifully with a huge variety of other colors! A small blue accent, whether it’s light blue, dark blue, or something in between, can create a wonderfully satisfying accent that pulls together all the other elements of your suite. A great example is this light blue ribbon, itself decorated with a gold wax seal. This would be a great addition to a black and white wedding invitation, one with a variety of pastel colors, or honestly almost any other color palette that you could think of.

Contrast and Advanced Techniques

This very creative and eye-catching wedding invitation example incorporates brown and blue in a way that simply has to be seen to be appreciated. Notice how the alternating brown and blue text on the invitation itself complements the brown envelope and name/address printed in blue ink. A further contrast is provided with the response card, which utilizes blue paper and white ink. We were delighted with the way these three rather muted, quiet color choices all worked together to form something unusually beautiful, and it’s something we will definitely keep in mind to offer future clients!

What Are Your Blue Ideas?

Have you always dreamed of having a wedding characterized by blue flowers, blue bridesmaid’s dresses, and blue stationery?
