A Little Etymology<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You already know how the first printing presses worked\u2013metal stamps were arranged in the right pattern, covered with ink, and pressed onto paper to create a page of text. Those metal stamps, in turn, were created by melting metal and pouring it into molds to form the stamp for each letter. The French word for melting metal in this process is \u201cfondre,\u201d which morphed into our English word \u201cfont.\u201d Makes perfect sense, right?<\/p>\n

Endless Font Variety<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We\u2019re very happy that today choosing a font from the millions of options out there\u2013or creating your very own from scratch\u2013doesn\u2019t involve any liquid-hot metal at all! Instead, we can set any block of text in a particular font and print off samples on our computer with the touch of a few keys. From the simplest blocky, hard-edged lettering to dramatically ornate cursive fonts and everything in between, there\u2019s a font out there to match every mood and every individual\u2019s unique identity.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s exactly why font is so important when you\u2019re creating your wedding invitations! As your friends and family members read your announcement, the font in which you present it says something about your mood, your personality, and even the tone of the ceremony itself.<\/p>\n

As you can see in the example below, a cursive font with lots of curls and swoops sets off a wedding invitation in a beautiful way, drawing on the deep-rooted traditions of calligraphy to connect the future with the treasured past.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s another example using an ornate cursive type font, but also mixing in a simpler font for some of the essential details. While decorative fonts are beautiful, they can also be a little difficult to read! For this reason, it\u2019s often a good idea to use a complementary but more basic font to communicate the venue name, address, times, and other details that your guests will need to get right in order to arrive at the right place by the right time!<\/p>\n

Across the entire invitation suite, you can pick out at least four distinct fonts, not to mention a variety of colors, sizes, and fill patterns. Yet despite the many fonts, you don\u2019t get a haphazard, disconnected impression. That\u2019s where the design expertise of our studio comes in! Specialized print techniques can use all sorts of ink colors, materials, and textures to bring a font to life in a unique way. Just consider what we did with this unusual invitation\u2013a large portion of the font doesn\u2019t use any ink at all! The words are created by stamping the paper instead of printing using ink. This modern technique is beautifully complemented by the gold ink and signature below the stamped words.<\/p>\n
