THE EXPERIENCE TO GUIDE YOU THROUGH
Why send a save-the-date instead of just invitations?
We’re often asked whether couples can skip save-the-date cards entirely. In most cases, we don’t recommend it unless your wedding is happening within six months. With a shorter engagement, save-the-dates and invitations would likely go out close together anyway.
A formal invitation sent too far in advance can be overlooked. Schedules change, mail disappears and information fades. A save-the-date wedding invitation solves that problem beautifully.
Wondering about timing? Send save-the-dates 6–12 months in advance, especially to traveling guests. Formal invitations can follow 6–10 weeks before the big day. It’s the perfect balance, plenty of planning time with a gentle reminder closer to the celebration.
There’s also another practical reason: plans evolve. Timelines shift. Venues adjust logistics. When you send a streamlined save-the-date first, you get flexibility before locking in every final detail.

What should be included on a save-the-date?
Your save-the-date should share the essentials without overwhelming your guests.
For your save-the-date cards for wedding celebrations, we suggest including:
Key notes
- The couple’s names (first names or first and last- middle names are usually unnecessary here)
- The wedding date (if it’s not on a Saturday, spell out the weekday to avoid confusion)
- The city and state or country
- Your wedding website (a helpful hub for travel info and registry details)
- Hotel block or travel information, if needed
- A simple note such as “Formal invitation to follow.”
What about the venue?
We typically save that for the formal invitation, especially if the ceremony and reception are in different locations. But there’s flexibility; if including it feels helpful, it’s perfectly fine
Does Dodeline offer Photo Save the Dates?
Yes, we do and they’re always a favorite. Photo save the dates add warmth and personality, whether you’re featuring professional engagement portraits or something a little more playful.
Some couples prefer a fully custom design built around their images. Others choose from one of our curated layouts and personalize the fonts and wording. However you approach it, your save the date wedding invitation will feel cohesive and thoughtfully designed.

How Long Does the Design Process Take?
Each couple’s planning journey unfolds at its own pace. Generally, the design of save the date cards for wedding occasions takes one to four weeks, influenced by the degree of customization and the review process for proofs.
Once you sign off on the final design, it usually takes two to four weeks for production. This duration is influenced by the time of the year and the printing style. If your schedule is busy (and most couples’ are), adding a bit of buffer time helps keep everything calm and enjoyable.
Starting early gives you room to breathe and that’s something every couple deserves.
Who Handles the Addressing?
We’re happy to manage envelope addressing for our custom clients. Once your design is approved for print, you’ll send over your guest list following our formatting guidelines and we’ll take care of the rest.
Keep in mind: guest list organization can be surprisingly time-consuming. Allow extra time for this step. Professionally addressed envelopes, then complete your stationery suite with a refined touch.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should we mail our save the dates?
For destination weddings, 6–12 months in advance is ideal. For local weddings, 6–8 months typically works well.
Can we use digital save the dates?
Digital Save The Dates are convenient, but printed Save The Dates seem more personal than something digital and therefore are less likely to get lost in the shuffle.
Should our save the date match the invitation exactly?
Not necessarily. They should feel cohesive in tone or style, but they don’t have to be identical.
What if our plans change after we send save the dates?
It happens. Updates can be shared through your wedding website and clarified in the formal invitation.
How many should we order?
Order one per household, plus a few extras for last-minute additions or keepsakes.
